The ultimate goal of tariqah Tidjaniya is the intuitive knowledge of God (gnosis or mahrifa).

According to a hadith Qudsi (where God speaks through the mouth of the Prophet Muhammad), God says:

"I was a hidden treasure, I wanted to be known, I then created the world."

The state of the "hidden treasure" is the divine essence before the creation of the world and the knowledge in question is the knowledge of initiation (El ma'rifah), which is incommunicable verbally.

The word "gnosis" or "ma'rifah" in Arabic, refers to the suprarational knowledge of the metacosmic realities.

Any gnosis is contained in the shahada (testimony of faith twice). This is probably the reason why the tradition says that the best word spoken by all the prophets is "Lah illah illa " (There is no God but God) and "Muhammadu Rassûlu Llah" (Muhammad is the Messenger of God).
